Mary Matz grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. She graduated from Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa in 1972 with a degree in American Studies, the study of American culture. She also did graduate work in American literature.

She began her career in New York City, working for one of the country's largest book publishers. Back in the Midwest, she worked as an advertising copywriter, book editor, and journalist   for daily, weekly, and monthly newspapers.

In 1995 she earned a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and moved to Prague, the Czech Republic, to teach "for one year"; she has lived there ever since. For six years she taught at Charles University, and in 1999 she began writing for Bridge magazine, the English-teaching magazine for Czech secondary school students and teachers. She also writes for a Czech tourism magazine and other publications.
